This collection of web courses focuses on the development of applications using Internet open standards and technology in the context of the global Internet and corporate intranets. Students will learn how to develop web applications using JavaScript[tm] technology with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Common Gateway Interface (CGI), Perl and databases. After completing these courses, students will have the core competencies required for understanding the role of Java[tm] technologies and JavaBeans[tm] architecture in web applications. These courses also review the importance of security on the web.

  • Understand the role of several core technologies for web applications development
  • Distinguish among the technologiesthat play a role primarily on the server from those
  • Combine complementary technologies in a single application
  • Understand some technologies that have multiple roles on the client and server
  • Write the syntax for a typical HTTP request and response
  • Develop a small CGI program with Perl
  • Write the proper syntax for some JavaScript technology object references
  • Read and modify the code for validating an HTML form
  • List some common JavaScript technology events and how they are triggered
  • Understand the advantages of using CGI, Perl, and JavaScript technology together in one application
  • Install Sun's Java[tm] Development Kit (JDK[tm] Software), write the code for a minimal client-side applet, compile it, and install it on the web
  • Understand the major roles of Java technologies and JavaBeans architecture in developing web applications
  • Provide message privacy with encryption technology
  • Install and test a visual development environment for JavaBeans architecture
  • Use the development environment to assemble an applet and publish it on the Web
  • Discern how public key encryption differs from secret key encryption
  • Understand the role of a certificate authority
