The Sun ONE Certificate Server 4.7: The PKI Architecture Overview course provides students with a self-paced, web-based course to introduce them to the technology behind Public Key Infrastructures. The course also teaches students about the underlining capabilities of the Sun Microsystems PKI product called the Sun ONE Certificate Server.

This course requires the Macromedia Flash 4 (or higher) player. Click here to test if you have Flash.

This course requires a JavaScript enabled browser. The JavaScript technology works best using a Netscape 6+, Mozilla 1+ or MS-IE 5+ browser.

  • Describe a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
  • Describe the Sun ONE circle, including the vision, the architecture, and the expertise
  • Describe the Sun ONE middleware, the Sun ONE server software, and where PKI fits


  • Module 2: PKI Technologies
  • Describe Internet security issues
  • Describe secure solutions to each of these security problems
  • Describe Base-64 encoding, which is the format to transmit binary information over the Internet
  • Describe encryption and decryption using symmetric keys
  • Describe Public Key encryption and decryption
  • Describe the Message Digest
  • Describe digital signatures


  • Module 3: Certificates
  • Describe a Certificate, what it is and what it looks like
  • Request a Certificate, including the steps in creating and installing the Certificate
  • Use a certificate for client authentication into multiple servers hosting applications
  • Describe servers using a Certificate to create a secure connection between clients and servers
  • Describe other uses of certificates, for example, SMIME email security

  • Sign a digital Certificate when setting up a system of trust
